Principal Mechatronics Engineer

Boston, Massachusetts

Onsite

Full Time

$170k - $200k

Our client is a fast-growing robotics startup in Boston revolutionizing how automation systems interact with the physical world. Specializing in intelligent robotic platforms, they are building agile, adaptable machines that solve complex challenges in manufacturing, logistics, and beyond. With a commitment to innovation, reliability, and scalable design, they are expanding their core engineering team and seeking a Principal Mechatronics Engineer to lead the development of next-generation electromechanical systems.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Architect and lead the design, integration, and validation of advanced mechatronic systems—including actuators, sensors, motion subsystems, and control interfaces—for high-performance robotic platforms.

  • Collaborate closely with mechanical, electrical, and software engineers to develop tightly integrated hardware solutions that meet demanding performance, safety, and cost targets.

  • Conduct in-depth modeling and simulation of mechatronic systems (multiphysics, dynamic motion, thermal, and control interaction) using tools such as MATLAB/Simulink, SolidWorks Motion, or similar.

  • Guide system architecture decisions including motor selection, drivetrain design, feedback/control systems, and power transmission.

  • Lead prototyping, bring-up, and iterative testing efforts to de-risk designs and accelerate development cycles.

  • Oversee system reliability assessments, root cause analysis, and design improvements based on field feedback and test data.

  • Mentor and guide a growing team of mechanical and controls engineers; provide technical reviews, best practices, and architectural vision.

  • Drive technical documentation, product lifecycle planning, and transition to manufacturing in a fast-paced startup environment.

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Robotics, or a closely related discipline.

  • 10–15+ years of experience designing and building complex mechatronic systems, ideally within robotics, automation, or precision equipment industries.

  • Deep knowledge of electromechanical system design, motion control, and dynamic systems modeling.

  • Proficient in 3D CAD (SolidWorks preferred), with a strong grasp of GD&T, DFM/DFA, and tolerance analysis.

  • Experience working with embedded systems and controls teams to co-develop responsive, sensor-rich hardware.

  • Hands-on prototyping, debugging, and root cause analysis skills, with a willingness to get involved at the system and component levels.

  • Familiarity with rapid iteration, agile development, and working within early-stage product development environments.

  • Experience with PLM tools (e.g., Arena, Windchill) and configuration/document control systems.
