Principle Mechanical Engineer - Massachusetts

Our client, a leading product development consultancy, is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Principal Mechanical Engineer to join their team. In this role, you will work closely with clients to transform their challenges and ideas into fully developed product concepts. You will integrate research, design, and engineering to create functional prototypes that are ready for refinement and eventual contract manufacturing. This is a key position for an engineer with a strong background in mechanical systems, mechatronics, and robotics, combined with leadership experience.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the design and development of new mechanical and mechatronics systems for innovative products, including autonomous vehicle sensor hats, advanced power wheelchairs, and 3D printers.
  • Collaborate with clients to understand their product requirements and translate those into detailed design specifications.
  • Work closely with cross-functional teams to integrate all components and systems seamlessly across research, design, and engineering.
  • Develop, prototype, and iterate mechanical designs, ensuring functionality, reliability, and manufacturability.
  • Provide technical leadership to junior engineers, helping solve complex problems and offering guidance throughout the development process.
  • Conduct testing, simulations, and analysis to ensure designs meet performance and safety standards.
  • Oversee the preparation of engineering documentation such as CAD models, technical drawings, and specifications for manufacturing.
  • Drive the refinement of prototypes to prepare them for contract manufacturing, ensuring quality, cost, and timelines are met.
  • Stay current with industry trends in robotics, mechatronics, and product design, applying the latest innovations to design solutions.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum 8 years of mechanical engineering experience, specifically in product development and mechanical system design.
  • At least 2 years of leadership or mentoring experience, managing teams and overseeing complex engineering projects.
  • Strong background in robotics and mechatronics, with hands-on experience in designing integrated systems.
  • Proficiency in mechanical design software such as SolidWorks, AutoCAD, or equivalent.
  • Knowledge of materials science, manufacturing processes, and design for manufacturability (DFM).
  • Ability to manage multiple projects with competing deadlines, maintaining a focus on quality and attention to detail.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills with the ability to innovate when tackling engineering challenges.
  • Strong communication skills to collaborate effectively with both clients and internal teams.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with autonomous vehicle systems or assistive technology products such as power wheelchairs or robotics.
  • Familiarity with 3D printing technologies and rapid prototyping methods.
  • Advanced degree (Master’s or PhD) in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
  • Experience working with contract manufacturing and scaling prototypes to full production.
