Head of Data Department (SoCal / Hybrid)

About the Role:
We are seeking an experienced and strong leader to head our data department, driving the development and implementation of robust data infrastructure from the ground up. This is a key leadership role overseeing the Engineering, Data Science, and Analytics teams within the organization. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of building data systems from scratch and leading cross-functional teams while managing large volumes of third-party data.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Data Infrastructure Leadership: Lead the design, development, and execution of a comprehensive data infrastructure strategy to support the organization’s data needs.

  • Team Management: Oversee and mentor a talented team of data engineers, data scientists, and analysts, ensuring the smooth integration of systems and effective collaboration between departments.

  • Data Strategy Development: Define and drive data-driven strategies, ensuring data quality, accessibility, and alignment with business goals.

  • Third-Party Data Management: Manage and integrate large volumes of third-party data into internal systems, with a strong emphasis on SQL.

  • Collaboration Across Functions: Partner closely with stakeholders across engineering, product, and business operations to deliver insights and build scalable, sustainable solutions.

  • Hybrid Working: Collaborate in a hybrid work model, working in-office 2-3 times per week.

Qualifications:

  • Proven experience in leading and scaling data teams, particularly in building infrastructure from scratch.

  • Strong expertise in SQL and experience working with large sets of third-party data.

  • Strong leadership and communication skills with the ability to motivate and lead cross-functional teams.

  • Experience in building data systems and frameworks from the ground up.

  • Familiarity with a range of data technologies (technologies are flexible—what matters is the ability to build systems and infrastructure).

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to derive actionable insights from data
