Controller Accounting Director

A large North American company is seeking an experienced and analytical Controller to lead its accounting operations and drive financial performance improvements. This role requires a true accounting background, with a CPA/CMA or similar designation, and leadership experience within large organizations. The Controller will be responsible for overseeing accounting functions for field operations, including distribution centers, stores, and offices nationwide, and will report directly to the VP of Finance.

The ideal candidate will be a self-starter with strong problem-solving skills, capable of managing large-scale data integration from systems like JDE Tams, Mainframe, and PeopleSoft, while ensuring accuracy and efficiency. This role also involves identifying financial trends, addressing discrepancies, and collaborating with offshore teams to streamline processes. Leadership abilities are crucial, with a focus on driving team efficiency, gaining buy-in, and improving performance across a high-volume, dynamic environment. The position offers the opportunity to lead a team of approximately 20 accounting professionals and make a significant impact on the company's financial operations.


Required Skills & Experience

  • Bachelors degree in Accounting

  • CPA (Certified Public Accountant) or CMA (Certified Management Accountant) designation (required) or equivalent professional qualification.

  • Proven experience as a Controller or in a similar senior-level financial role, with a track record of leading teams in managing accounting operations.

  • Extensive experience in financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis.

  • Experience in financial data aggregation and integration from multiple sources (e.g., JDE Tams, Mainframe, and PeopleSoft).

  • Excellent leadership and team management skills, with the ability to motivate and develop a team of accounting professional

What You Will Be Doing

Daily Responsibilities

 

  • Monitor the financial performance of APGs field operations including Distribution centers, Stores, District and Division offices.

  • Compile and analyze financial reporting packages.

  • Maximizes return on financial assets by establishing financial policies, procedures, controls, and reporting systems.

  • Protects assets by establishing, monitoring, and enforcing internal controls including timely account reconciliations.

  • Monitors and confirms financial condition by conducting audits and providing information to internal and external auditors.

  • Ensures monthly financial statements are complete and accurate. Analyzes variances and creates management reporting that is informational and actionable.

  • Provides status of financial condition by collecting, interpreting, and reporting financial data.

  • Provides business support to operations and advises on accounting policies and business transactions.

  • Prepares special reports by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing information and trends.

  • Collaboratively partner with other GPC departments and shared service organizations on all items and activities that impact the financial statements and operations.

  • Assesses current accounting operations, offering recommendations for improvement and implementing new processes.

  • Oversees all sales tax compliance and reporting for the field operations including advising management on needed actions.

  • Completes operational requirements by scheduling and assigning employees; following up on work results.

  • Develops and leads team by recruiting, training and retaining skilled employees.

  • Maintains financial staff job results by coaching, counseling, and disciplining employees; planning, monitoring, and appraising job results.
