A company based in Bethesda, Maryland, is currently hiring a Data Engineering Manager – Actuarial and Data Science Department to join their growing team. The organization is a nonprofit reciprocal risk?retention group that provides liability insurance and risk management services tailored for educational institutions — including K?12 schools, colleges, and universities. They are known for their deep understanding of the unique risks facing the education sector and offer a wide range of coverage solutions, including general liability, educators’ legal liability, and cyber liability. The organization also supports its members through proactive risk management resources, training programs, and thought leadership to help prevent claims and improve campus safety. This position is a hybrid role, requiring 2–3 days per week onsite at their Bethesda office.

Key Responsibilities
- Lead and develop a high-performing team of data engineers through mentorship, performance management, and professional growth opportunities.
- Architect and maintain scalable Azure-based data solutions, including SQL data warehouses, data marts, and Data Factory pipelines to support actuarial and data science functions.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams—including actuaries, data scientists, and business stakeholders—to deliver reliable, well-documented, and accessible data assets.
- Ensure data quality, security, and compliance with internal policies and external regulations, while establishing and promoting data engineering best practices.
- Oversee vendor relationships and stay current with emerging technologies to drive continuous improvement, performance optimization, and strategic innovation in the data platform.
- Ten or more years of experience in data engineering, including 2–3 years in a leadership role managing and mentoring technical teams.
- Deep expertise in Microsoft Azure data services, such as Azure SQL and Data Factory, with a proven track record of building and maintaining enterprise-scale data warehouses and marts.
- Industry experience in insurance or financial services, ideally supporting actuarial or advanced analytics functions, with strong knowledge of data governance, security, and compliance.
- Strong collaboration and communication skills, with the ability to work across technical and business teams and manage vendor relationships effectively.
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Data Engineering, or a related field (Master’s preferred), along with excellent problem-solving and analytical skills in large-scale data environments.
