Principal Systems Architect – Life Sciences Innovation

Location: Wilmington, MA (Hybrid)
Team: Internal Innovation Lab – Platform and Systems Team

About the Organization

A global semiconductor leader is enabling breakthroughs at the Intelligent Edge by combining analog, digital, and software technologies. With more than $9 billion in annual revenue and approximately 24,000 employees worldwide, the company delivers solutions that drive progress across digitized factories, mobility, digital healthcare, sustainability, and connected technologies.

About the Innovation Lab

The internal innovation lab operates like a startup within the organization, designed to rapidly explore, prototype, and scale breakthrough technologies. It brings together engineers, scientists, and business leaders in a fast-paced, experiment-driven environment to transform early-stage ideas into future-defining solutions.

Position Overview

The Platform and Systems Team is seeking a Principal Systems Architect (or highly experienced Systems Engineer) to lead the development of next-generation research tools and Minimum Viable Products (MVPs) in life sciences. This is a hands-on, cross-disciplinary leadership role at the intersection of semiconductors, software, and biology.

You will guide a multi-functional technical team from concept through prototype, driving architectural decisions and technical strategy in a dynamic, iterative environment. Your contributions will shape products that integrate electronics and life sciences, transforming how data and biology interact.

Key Responsibilities
  • Architect and lead the development of research tools, prototypes, and MVPs in the life sciences domain.

  • Translate conceptual ideas into actionable experiments and iterative prototypes.

  • Design and build end-to-end systems that bridge semiconductor technology with biological applications.

  • Distill complex, cross-domain requirements into practical and scalable architectures.

  • Provide technical leadership across mechanical, fluidics, optics, electronics, software, and cloud domains.

  • Make build vs. buy decisions and manage relationships with external partners and vendors.

  • Prioritize R&D efforts based on impact, feasibility, and time-to-market trade-offs.

Required Qualifications
  • Master’s degree or higher in a relevant technical discipline (engineering, biology, chemistry, etc.).

  • 10+ years of industry experience in system engineering, hardware/software integration, or R&D.

  • Proven track record of technical leadership in multidisciplinary system design and development.

  • Strong collaborative and communication skills in fast-paced, ambiguous environments.

  • Broad technical knowledge with deep expertise in at least one domain (e.g., electronics, fluidics, cloud).

  • Familiarity with optical and/or RF sensing systems, signal processing, and system-level integration.

  • Experience gathering user or customer requirements from clinicians, life science researchers, or domain experts.

  • Experience collaborating with computational or quantitative biology teams.

  • Sound business judgment and understanding of product lifecycle, MVPs, and innovation pipelines.

Work Environment
  • Location: Wilmington, MA

  • Work Type: Hybrid (in-office presence required for prototyping and hardware collaboration)

Why This Role?

This is a rare opportunity to work on the front lines of innovation in life sciences within a well-resourced, startup-like lab environment. You’ll be part of a team that rapidly transforms bold ideas into working prototypes, with real impact at the intersection of biology and cutting-edge electronics.
